The Olympics are in full swing and your child may or may not be watching them, but it presents a good opportunity to have a conversation about feeling proud.
When I ask my kids what the Olympics are I get mostly the same answer, "It's about playing sports". While this is true, I make a point of telling them it is about encouraging people to be the best that they can be. The athletes train hard for years before the Olympics so they can win a medal. This leads to my next question to the kids,
"How do you think the athletes feel when they win a medal at the Olympics?"
Sometimes they tell me happy and that is a correct answer, but what we are looking for is PROUD!
Now let's ask,
"Think of a time where you worked hard on something and felt proud"
It doesn't have to be sports related. It could be something they did in art, school, at home, etc. Maybe they tried a new food! Anything could work as long as they felt proud about it.
Once they have determined an event, use the worksheet below to have them draw and write about what happened. If they are too young to write, have them draw the event and assist them with writing their story. When it is complete, hang it on the wall to showcase their accomplishment!
WORKSHEET 2
The second worksheet is about building up self-worth.
Before beginning the worksheet ask your child,
"What does it mean to have value?"
I'll get many answers related to money or gold. Then I will suggest what makes a person valuable? This question usually makes them think. Children have always associated value with tangible items. Intangible items that can make a person valuable could include:
Honesty
Kindness
Courage
Integrity
Generosity
Empathy
Creative
Confident
Innovative
Specific Skills
Many other character traits!
Describe these character traits with your child and what they mean. Tell them that these are traits that make a person valuable. Then ask them,
"What traits or skills make you valuable or important?"
Have them color and write or draw what they think in the trophy worksheet. They may have a hard time coming up with something. If this happens, you can step in to help them come up with some ideas of how you view them.
By the end of this exercise they should be able to identify intangible things that make someone valuable or important, as well as, self reflect characteristics that make them unique and important.
Thank you for reading! I hope you find these activities with your child beneficial.
